Game Designer at QMOBI

To make 3D animation, there are three stages: conception, design, and completion execution. Each stage's specific steps may differ based on project needs. Here's an overview of the process

Step 1.

Understanding the Ideas and Goals behind the Project The art director and the art team gather all necessary project information to establish creative goals and determine ways to achieve them.

Step 2.

Setting Up Benchmarks and Defining Art Style The art team sets visual targets, determines workflows and skills required to achieve those targets, and creates art guidelines.

Step 3.

Gathering Materials and References The art director and the art team collect art materials and references to inspire bolder, more authentic art styles and find strong concepts and proper art direction.

Step 4.

Setting Up an Art Production Roadmap The art director and the art team assemble a production plan, defining team roles and responsibilities for the 3D animation project.

Step 5.

Working on Drafts The art team works on a series of drafts to explore a selected art style and ensure that the key art aligns with the initial concepts.

Step 6.

Creating the Key Art The art team creates original art according to defined concepts and established workflows, as directed.

Step 7.

Refining and Polishing the Result The art team refines the art they've created, checking for weak spots and removing them.

Step 8.

Analyzing Style and Art Production Improvements The art team takes a retrospective look at the production steps, finding ways to improve the elements of the 3D animation design services and elevate the results.

How much does 2d animation cost?

2D animation is a highly sought-after animation style today. Many brands are turning to 2D animation services to enhance their projects, given the reasonable cost-to-video quality ratio.

The price of an animated video primarily depends on the animation style, animation complexities, duration of the video, presence of voiceover, and terms of project implementation. Other factors that can influence the price include the video format, type of illustrations used, the number of videos in the project, and the number of edits after animation.

It is worth noting that both 2D and 3D animators possess different skill sets and charge accordingly. However, most 2D studios provide all types of animation and do not differentiate much in price when it comes to quoting a client on the different types of animation.

It is important to remember that the animation process is a time-intensive one that requires a lot of work. Although some of the prices may seem high, it generally indicates that high-quality work will be delivered.

Why outsource game animation services?

When a studio outsources animation services, they can increase their capacity and decrease costs while maintaining high quality standards. It's a common practice, even among larger studios such as EA, Epic Games, and Ubisoft. Studios often have outsourcing managers who communicate with outsourced artists to ensure consistent quality, which can lead to faster animation turnaround times. Some studios specialize in outsourcing and act as a resource for other studios, particularly during early production or porting. Outsourcing allows studios to focus on other aspects of production, resulting in a more efficient workflow and better end products. It's a simple process that involves defining the necessary assets, timeframe, and budget. Game animation outsourcing isn't limited to just animation, as outsourced artists can work on a variety of tasks, including UX/UI.

What is product animation?

Product animation is a type of animation that is specifically designed to showcase a real physical product or packaging in a visually appealing way. This animation is photorealistic and provides an accurate representation of a product that exists or is in the process of being produced. It is commonly used in advertising and can be used for a variety of items, such as phones, furniture, appliances, cars, bikes, boats, houses, and commercial buildings.

Product animation is a versatile tool that can serve multiple purposes. It can be used to pitch a product to investors or a panel, as it effectively demonstrates how a product works and its value to both consumers and investors. It is also an efficient and cost-effective way to advertise a product before it is physically produced and available for purchase. Without product animation, generating excitement and demand for products, especially in the tech industry, would be a challenge. Companies like Apple and Samsung frequently utilize product animation to promote their upcoming products before they are even available to consumers.

What software is used for 3D animation?

There are several 3D animation software suites available, but the most commonly used ones include Maya, 3D Studio Max, Blender, Unity, and Unreal. Maya is the most popular choice due to its extensive range of tools that allow for the creation of almost anything in a 3D environment, including simulations, frame-based animation, and asset modelling. It is the industry standard for 3D animation and is found in most studios that handle 3D. Unity and Unreal, on the other hand, are primarily used for game development, but can also be used for character or environmental animation.

How long does it take to make a 3D animation?

The time required for 3D animation production depends on various factors such as complexity, art style, length, quality, number of assets and characters, and VFX. Typically, it takes around 1 to 2 months to produce 1 minute of stylized 3D animation and 2 to 3 months for 3D photorealistic/realistic style, but this is only an approximation.

Below are some of our 3D animation services with their approximate time frames:

3D Character Design (concept art, model sheet, modeling, texturing): 3-10 days
Rig & Skin: 3-7 days
3D Character Animation (per minute): 7-10 days
3D Environment Design (concept art, modeling, texturing): 5-10 days
3D Props Animation (per minute): 1-2 days
Animating (for a full video with one or several characters, props, environments, etc. - per minute): 2-4 weeks
Motion Capture Clean Up (per minute): 4 days
Lighting, Shadering & Render Setup (per scene): 1-3 days
It's worth noting that many tasks are often done in parallel to minimize the overall production time. For example, while the concept artist designs a character, the 3D modeling can begin, and another artist may work on designing other characters or the environment at the same time.
